School classes – Babel Box

The contribution of 10 to 11-year-old schoolchildren is a central element in the creation of "Babel 2007": in autumn 2006 each of the participating orchestras named a school class, to work on an individual composition with three or four of its own trained musicians over a period of several months. On the 22nd January 2007 each of the four classes received a "Babel Box", containing a diary, various tools and a recording device along with concrete musical starting elements (melodies, rhythms, sounds) provided by the composer Violeta Dinescu. The children will work with this material, invent new melodies, rhythms and sounds. Every three weeks the four "Babel boxes" with all the recordings made and the completed diaries will then be passed on to the next class in the series. This procedure will be repeated over and over again, and with each exchange the results of the preceding group will be worked into each group’s own composition in a freely chosen manner. Thus an individually different composition based on mutual exchange will be created in each of the four places, and at the end this composition will be inserted into the symphonic whole and performed by the schoolchildren and their respective orchestras on the four dates in May and June 2007 in Luxembourg, Metz, Saarbrücken and Trier.

The music mediators Ortrud Kegel (Cologne), Sarah Goldfarb (Brussels), Paul Rissmann (Glasgow) and Klaus Brettschneider (Luxembourg) will take care of the contents of the"Babel boxes".
